Molecular Markers of Infectious Diseases
نویسنده
چکیده
The development of effective strategies for the assessment and control of infectious diseases requires a better understanding of pathogen biology, host immune response, and diseases pathogenesis as well as the identification of the associated biomarkers. Therefore, characterizing and identifying host and pathogen determinants of protection or progression to disease in exposed subjects are the necessary first steps toward disease control. This special issue brings together a body of critical information on selected diseases and provides a peek into infectious diseases markers. Through five reviews, focusing on pathogen factors, host genetic and immunological determinants that lead to protection or disease progression, the authors emphasize the essential role of biomarkers in the design of new effective therapies and vaccines. Also discussed in this issue are the premises of molecular epidemiology studies of infectious diseases. The first review (Beatriz Mothe and colleagues) discusses virological, immune and host genetic markers in the control of HIV-infection. The authors highlight the need to define precise immune correlates of controlled HIV infection for the early assessment of vaccine success in phase I and phase II trials. Also discussed is the identification of host genetic markers that in the future could facilitate the design of gene therapy approaches by either blocking the expression of unfavourable genes or by introducing beneficial components. متن کاملMolecular Identification and Conventional Susceptibility Testing of Iranian Clinical Mycobacterium fortuitum Isolates
Objective(s) Rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) are capable of producing diseases in humans. Since mycobacteria vary in their susceptibility, precise identification is critical for adoption of correct drug therapy. The main aim of this study was molecular identification and evaluation of antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Iranian clinically isolated Myocbacterium fortuitum. Materials and...
متن کاملMolecular epidemiology of viral meningitis in children in south east of Caspian Sea, Iran
Viruses are the most common causes of aseptic meningitis. Early detection, treatment and management of viral meningitis are priority. This study aimed to evaluate common viral meningitis in children referred to Taleghani pediatrics hospital in Gorgan, south east of Caspian Sea, Iran. In this descriptive study CSF and blood samples were taken from 40 children with negative bacterial culture who ...
متن کاملMicrosatellite Genotyping of Candida parapsilosis Clinical Isolates
Background and Purpose: Candida parapsilosis is a predominant species found in nosocomial infection, particularly in hospitalized patients. The molecular epidemiology of the clinical strains of this species has not been well studied. The present study was performed with the aim of investigating the microsatellite genotyping of Candida parapsilosis among the Iranian clinical isolates. Materials...
متن کاملReference Values of Lymphocyte Sub-Populations in Healthy Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Negative Iranian Adults
Background: Lymphocyte subsets enumeration is considered prominent in the management of primary and acquired immunodeficiency disorders. Because of local variations due to race, age, gender, and environmental conditions on lymphocyte subsets, and to improve the accuracy of interpretation of laboratory findings, reference intervals must be determined in every population. Objective: To establish ...
متن کاملLow Prevalence of Aeromonas hydrophilain Infectious Diarrhea Samples of Pediatric Patients in Arak, Iran
Background: Aeromonashydrophila (A. hydrophila) is an aquatic bacterium that can cause a spectrum of infectious diseases, including both gastrointestinal and extraintestinal infections. Due to the high rate of diarrheal infections in pediatric patients in central Iran, this study was designed to determine the frequency of A. hydrophila in diarrhea samples from children in this region. Method...
